Is Chiropractic Care Covered by Insurance?
Chiropractic care coverage varies significantly between plans. Unlike mental health or
maternity care, chiropractic treatment is not mandated as an essential health benefit
under the ACA for all plans. However, many commercial health plans — including
employer group plans and some marketplace plans — do include chiropractic coverage,
typically as part of a broader rehabilitative services or musculoskeletal benefit.
Medicare Part B covers chiropractic care for spinal manipulation only (no other services
from a chiropractor are Medicare-covered). Medicaid chiropractic coverage varies by state
— some states cover it, most do not.
What Plans Typically Cover for Chiropractic
When chiropractic is covered, plans usually include:
- Spinal manipulation (the core chiropractic treatment)
- Limited visit number per year (commonly 12–30 visits, though some plans have
no hard cap and instead require medical necessity)
- Prior authorization required after a certain number of visits on some plans
- The same cost-sharing structure as specialist visits (copay or coinsurance after
deductible, depending on your plan type)
Services often not covered even when chiropractic is included: nutritional supplements
sold by the chiropractor, massage therapy billed separately, x-rays performed in the
office (may require separate authorization), and some ancillary services.
Finding Plans That Include Chiropractic Coverage
When comparing plans, look for chiropractic coverage in the Summary of Benefits and
Coverage (SBC) document under “rehabilitative services” or a specific
chiropractic benefit line. You can also call the insurer directly and ask:
- Is chiropractic care covered?
- How many visits are covered per year?
- Is prior authorization required?
- What is my copay or coinsurance per visit?
- Are chiropractors in my area in-network for this plan?
What Chiropractic Costs Without Coverage
Without insurance, chiropractic visits typically run $65–$200 per session depending
on location and the services provided. Many chiropractors offer package rates or
discounted cash-pay pricing. For patients needing frequent visits for chronic conditions,
the difference between covered and uncovered plans can add up to several hundred dollars
per year.
