About Atrium Health
Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas HealthCare System) is the dominant health system in the
Charlotte, North Carolina region and one of the largest in the Southeast. Flagship facilities
include Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center (the region’s only Level I trauma center),
Atrium Health Pineville, Atrium Health University City, Atrium Health Huntersville, Atrium Health
Cabarrus, and Levine Children’s Hospital. Atrium Health merged with Advocate Aurora Health
in 2022 to form Advocate Health, one of the largest nonprofit health systems in the U.S.
Which Plans Include Atrium Health in Charlotte?
Atrium Health contracts with most major carriers in the Charlotte market, including Blue Cross
Blue Shield of North Carolina, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare. However, Atrium Health and
Novant Health — Charlotte’s other major system — do not always appear together
in every plan. Some narrow-network products include one but not the other.
BCBS of NC is the dominant insurer in North Carolina, and most of their PPO products include
Atrium Health. Confirm your specific plan product (not just BCBS of NC generally) includes
the specific Atrium campus where you plan to receive care.
Atrium Health vs. Novant Health: Which Plans Cover Both?
Charlotte residents are often loyal to one system or the other, but many have doctors at both.
Broad PPO plans in the Charlotte market typically include both Atrium and Novant. If you want
flexibility between both systems, avoid HMO and EPO products that may limit you to one.
Atrium Health Urgent Care and Insurance
Atrium Health operates a network of urgent care locations across the Charlotte metro called
Atrium Health Urgent Care. These locations are in-network for most plans that include Atrium
Health as a system, but urgent care network status should be confirmed separately from hospital
coverage since some plans have different urgent care tiers.
