About Novant Health
Novant Health is a nonprofit integrated health network with 19 hospitals and hundreds of
physician practices and outpatient facilities across North Carolina, South Carolina,
Virginia, and Georgia. Major facilities include Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center
in Charlotte, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, Novant Health
Huntersville Medical Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, and Novant Health
Kernersville Medical Center. The system employs more than 35,000 team members and serves
communities across a broad region of the Southeast.
Novant Health vs. Atrium Health in Charlotte
Charlotte’s hospital market is divided between two dominant systems: Novant Health
and Atrium Health (now part of Advocate Health). Most major PPO plans in the Charlotte
market include both. Narrow-network and HMO products sometimes anchor to one system
exclusively.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC is the dominant carrier in North Carolina and has a
long-standing relationship with both systems. Their Blue Local plans are sometimes
built around a single system — confirm which system your specific Blue Local
plan is anchored to before enrolling.
Novant Health in Winston-Salem and the Triad
In the Winston-Salem and NC Triad market, Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is the
anchor facility and participates in most commercial plan networks in that area. The
competing system in that market is Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. As with Charlotte,
broad PPO plans include both; some HMO/EPO products may be anchored to one system.
Which Carriers Include Novant Health?
Novant Health contracts with BCBS of NC, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana
in its primary markets. Coverage is plan-specific and can differ significantly between
PPO and HMO products from the same carrier.
