Piedmont Healthcare is a private, not-for-profit health system with 22 hospitals and dozens
of medical offices and outpatient centers across Georgia. Major facilities include Piedmont
Atlanta Hospital (in Buckhead), Piedmont Hospital (its historic flagship in midtown Atlanta),
Piedmont Fayette Hospital (in Fayetteville), Piedmont Henry Hospital, Piedmont Newnan Hospital,
Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, and Piedmont Macon Medical Center. The system has
grown significantly through acquisitions across both Metro Atlanta and rural Georgia.
Which Plans Include Piedmont Healthcare?
Piedmont Healthcare participates in most major commercial carrier networks in Georgia,
including Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare,
and Humana. Network participation varies by specific plan product. Most broad PPO products
include Piedmont; some HMO and narrow-network marketplace plans may route to fewer systems.
Piedmont vs. WellStar vs. Emory in the Atlanta Market
Metro Atlanta’s three major hospital systems each have geographic strongholds.
Piedmont dominates midtown Atlanta, Buckhead, and communities south of the city.
WellStar leads in Cobb County and northwest/west Atlanta suburbs. Emory anchors the
northeast side near Emory University and DeKalb County. Choosing a plan that includes
all three gives you the most flexibility; narrow-network plans may limit you to one or two.
Piedmont Physicians Group and In-Network Status
Many physicians in the Atlanta area are employed by or affiliated with Piedmont Healthcare
through the Piedmont Physician Network. A physician being affiliated with Piedmont does not
automatically mean they bill under Piedmont’s hospital contract — the physician
and the hospital facility must both be in-network. Verify the specific physician and the
facility separately when confirming coverage.
