About Prisma Health
Prisma Health is the largest not-for-profit health system in South Carolina, formed by the merger of
Palmetto Health and Greenville Health System in 2017. The system operates 18 hospitals and more than
300 locations across the Upstate and Midlands regions of South Carolina. Major facilities include
Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, Prisma Health
Baptist Hospital, Prisma Health Tuomey Medical Center, Prisma Health Patewood Hospital, and
Prisma Health Hillcrest Hospital.
Prisma Health Upstate vs. Prisma Health Midlands
Prisma Health operates under two geographic divisions: Upstate (centered on Greenville and Spartanburg)
and Midlands (centered on Columbia). Network contracts may differ slightly between the two divisions
depending on the carrier and plan product. If you live in the Upstate but may need care in Columbia
(or vice versa), confirm your plan covers Prisma Health locations in both regions.
Which Carriers Include Prisma Health?
Prisma Health contracts with most major commercial carriers in South Carolina, including BlueCross
BlueShield of South Carolina (the dominant insurer in the state), Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare.
BCBS of SC is the most important carrier to confirm for South Carolina residents — most BCBS SC
products include Prisma Health, but some narrow-network products may vary.
