What Is NC Medicaid?
Medicaid is a joint federal-state health insurance program that provides free or low-cost coverage
to people who meet income and eligibility requirements. In North Carolina, the Medicaid program is called
NC Medicaid. It is administered by the state but jointly funded by state and federal governments.
North Carolina Has Expanded Medicaid
North Carolina expanded Medicaid under the ACA, extending coverage to adults with household income up
to 138% of the federal poverty level (approximately $21,597 for a single adult in 2026).
This means non-disabled adults without children who meet the income threshold can now qualify for
NC Medicaid — a major change from pre-expansion rules that limited Medicaid to narrow
eligibility categories.
Marketplace as Alternative in North Carolina
If you don’t qualify for NC Medicaid, the ACA marketplace is your primary option.
North Carolina marketplace carriers include: Blue Cross NC, Ambetter from WellCare of NC, Aetna, Cigna, Oscar Health. ACA premium tax credits are available for
households earning between 100% and 400% FPL (~$15,650–$62,600 for a single adult in 2026).
