Qualifying Life Events Explained

Every life event that can open a Special Enrollment Period.

Loss of Health Coverage

Losing existing health coverage — whether from a job loss, reduction in work hours, aging off a parent's plan, or a previous plan ending — is one of the most common qualifying life events and opens a Special Enrollment Period to find new coverage.

Changes in Household

Getting married, getting divorced, having a baby, adopting a child, or having a death in the family that affects your household size can all qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period.

Changes in Residence

Moving to a new zip code, county, or state — especially if it changes which plans are available to you — is typically a qualifying life event, as is moving to or from a shelter or transitional housing.

Changes in Income or Eligibility

A change in income that affects your subsidy eligibility, gaining citizenship or lawful presence status, or a change in eligibility for other coverage like Medicaid can also open a Special Enrollment window.

Acting Within the Window

Most Special Enrollment Periods last 60 days from the date of the qualifying event, so it's worth checking your eligibility as soon as a life event happens rather than waiting.
